Theory and Practice of Storage and Restoration of Paper Sources

August 26 to September 2,2017 Short courses “Theory and Practice of Storage and Restoration of Paper Sources” for specialists of four organizations of Kazakhstan were held in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The initiators of these courses were the Organization of Culture and Islamic Relations in cooperation with the Organization of Archives and the National Library of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

From the National Center for Manuscripts and Rare Books, Musina Danagul (Acting Head of the Organization Department of the Exhibition and Reading Rooms) and Abeldinov Nurlybek (Head of Accounting, Storage, Restoration and Conservation of Manuscripts and Rare Books) were sent to attend these courses.

On the day of the visit, the delegation was greeted by the Director of the Library of the Organization of Culture and Islamic Relations, Mrs. Nuri, who subsequently introduced us to Gahreman Soleimani, Deputy to the research and educational work of the Organization of Culture and Islamic Relations.

Before the beginning of the study, we were introduced to the Director General of the Organization of Archives and the National Library of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammad Hodadi, who briefly described the courses and announced their program.

During the courses, we got acquainted with the policy of preservation and storage in the Organization of the archives and the national library of the Islamic Republic of Iran;

methods of identification of biological factors;

methods of removing additional layers from paper sources;

methods of removing stains from sources;

methods of deactivation of acid from paper works;

methods of destroying pests in the environment and from damaged sources;

methods of digitizing documents;

familiarity with the methods of restoration; methods of book binding.

In addition to theoretical knowledge, the courses provided an opportunity to immediately consolidate the theory that was passed in practice.

So, for example, in the biological laboratory with manuscripts we took an analysis for the identification of mold and fungi;

In the chemical laboratory, on rare books, they got rid of scotch by chemical means;

in the restoration department, paper was prepared for restoration by staining it with tea; were engaged in preparation of glue and restoration of maps.

The most memorable work for us was the production in the department of binding a notebook and its design by embossing.

Based on the results of the studies, the participants were awarded certificates confirming the fact of passing these courses.
